The Overwhelm Factor
What Do You Really Need to Know About Starting An Internet
Business?
The underlying reason that so many people are looking to start
an internet business is pretty obvious. It's about making
money! Now, the motives behind that are a bit more varied.
For some, it's a desire for a better life. That desire might be
personal, or it might be to better support a spouse, children,
or other loved ones. On the personal side, maybe the
inclination is to work a little less hard. Perhaps, it's just
to have more time to enjoy life. Hopefully, few people are in
it for the money alone -- but it happens.
Where income is needed or desired, it's natural to look at new
business opportunities. And where do most people look? The
internet, of course!
This is where it starts to get a little complicated. You can
quickly hit information overload. Look up "easy internet
businesses" online and you will likely be flooded with offers,
ideas, and promises, promises, promises.
It sounds good. It sounds easy. And so you decide to take that
step and strike out on your own. As with anything new, you
realize you will need to learn some new things. The future
still looks bright!
Now what? Where do you start? It seems to make sense to go to
the experts. They are succeeding, right? That's roughly when
you start to run into the avalanche of terms:
Search engine optimization, niche marketing, key words,
affiliate programs, blogging, Google Ads, Web 2.0, keyword
density, posting, list building, ISP and on and on.
It is really easy to get lost in a sea of information and waste
a lot of valuable time. You sign up for programs, you buy
packages, get e-books and hope for the best. There is a great
allure to having someone just hand you a package that
"guarantees" you an income, has no hidden costs and is
complete. There are a number of people offering just that even
as this is being written. While it's possible that some people
have made money signing up with someone else's program, the
real beneficiary is almost always the designer of that
plan.
In the final analysis, there appear to be several common
denominators to making an income online. They are:
1. Your own website. (People need to find you.)
2. Something to sell. (This can be a service or product.)
3. Content. (Your website needs to communicate what it is that
you can offer.)
4. Visitors. (It is necessary to generate traffic to the
website so that people buy.)
5. A mailing list. (People interested in what you have to
say.)
While much more can be said about any one of these five points,
that's really it.
Almost every product out there hopes to gain some benefit from
your interest. That is the reality. If you understand
that, you can be much more selective in your approach to this
new venture. Plus, you will understand that you are exchanging
something of value, for something of equal or (hopefully)
greater value.
Startup costs for many businesses can easily run into the tens
of thousands. Certain franchises can run into the
hundreds of thousands. Even an internet business can
easily cost someone over $10,000 dollars to create.
It is possible to start out for much
less, however. In fact, this is the beauty of internet
businesses. While it is true that individuals are offering
"start-up packages" in the range of $100 to $500, you do not
really have full control over that business. It's not
completely yours, and the more you want to make it yours, the
more it costs you. So why not just develop your own?!
Doing it on your own, you should be able to create your FIRST
site for under $750 as of this writing. There are not very many
profitable business that can be started for that little,
really. Especially when you consider the return. Moreover,
subsequent websites you create will cost you very little. Your
initial expenses are going to be for the programs that help you
to develop and design your websites. You will also need a way
to deliver your product and stay in touch with your prospects.
Later costs of hosting new web sites as you expand your
business are much less.
Keep in mind that it is possible to establish a web presence
for less than that too. If $750 is beyond your budget, you are
not out of the game, but your income is likely to be small.
The best thing to do is establish a plan. Set yourself targets
and goals. If finance is a limitation, set goals for that as
well. Remember, if you want to make money online, you need to
create the five things listed above. As temping as many offers
are, watch your spending. Be systematic. Budget your time on
these new projects. It can be exciting to start a new venture,
but until it succeeds, don't ignore what is supporting you
financially right now!
